The Rookie Surprise Rangers began their 2013 campaign with a victory on Thursday, getting a home run from first-round pick Travis Demeritte in his first professional at-bat. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's minor league action in the Texas Rangers system.



AAA: Round Rock 8 – Memphis 7

The Express surrendered a 7-2 lead by giving up five runs in the eighth inning, but Jared Hoying’s pinch-hit walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth won it for Round Rock.

Left-hander Ryan Feierabend turned in a strong outing for the Express, tossing six innings of two-run ball. He gave up six hits, walked three, and struck out nine.

Memphis got back into the game against Express reliever Lisalverto Bonilla, who was tagged for five runs on four hits and three walks in just 1.1 frames. The outing raised Bonilla’s ERA to 7.14.

Second baseman Greg Miclat (2/5, 2 2B) and DH Aaron Cunningham (2/4, 2 2B, BB) both doubled twice. Cunningham leads the club with 24 two-baggers on the season.

Leury Garcia (2/5), Joey Butler (1/3, 2 BB), Jim Adduci (0/2, 3 BB), Chris McGuiness (1/2, 2 BB), and Jose Felix (1/3, BB) all reached base multiple times.

Lefty Nate Robertson earned the win after tossing 1.2 shutout frames in relief.

The RoughRiders and Hooks played Thursday’s nine-inning contest in just two hours.

Both pitching staffs pounded the strike zone and kept the offenses at bay, as they combined to walk only one batter and gave up just two runs on seven hits.

Frisco hurler Neil Ramirez opened the game with six innings of two-hit shutout ball. He struck out six without walking a batter and threw just 67 pitches.

After Ramirez exited the game, lefty Jimmy Reyes (1 IP) and righties Joakim Soria (1 IP) and Wilmer Font (1 IP) all tossed scoreless ball to close out the shutout.

Soria was making his first rehab appearance of the season. The former All-Star closer tossed a 1-2-3 frame, throwing seven of his 10 pitches for strikes.

Frisco cleanup hitter Alex Buchholz provided all of the game’s scoring with his two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. The round-tripper was his seventh in Double-A this season.

Brett Nicholas (1/3, 3B) tripled while Ryan Strausborger (1/3) and Hanser Alberto (1/3) both singled for the club’s other knocks.

The Crawdads got more excellent work from starting pitcher Luis Parra, who tossed seven scoreless innings en route to earning the victory. Parra gave up four hits, walked three, and struck out four.

Meanwhile, centerfielder Lewis Brinson flashed his raw power by going 2-for-4 with a double, his 14th home run, and four runs batted in. Leadoff man Nick Williams (1/4, HR) added his 13th round-tripper.

Ryan Rua (1/4, 2B), Jorge Alfaro (2/4, 2B), and Jordan Akins (2/4, 2B) all doubled. Right fielder Nomar Mazara had a single and two walks in his four plate appearances.

Hard-throwing reliever Keone Kela earned his first save of the season by striking out three batters over two scoreless innings. He lowered his ERA to 2.60.

The Indians and Hawks were washed out on Thursday. They’ll play a single game on Friday followed by a doubleheader on Saturday.

Rangers first-round pick Travis Demeritte socked a three-run homer in his first professional at-bat. Overall, the shortstop went 1-for-4 with that long ball and a walk. He also committed a fielding error.

On the mound, starting pitcher Kevin Sosa gave up just one run on five hits in 4.2 innings, striking out four without issuing a walk.

After John Niggli yielded three runs on six hits in 2.2 frames, Santo Perez tossed 1.2 scoreless to finish out the victory.

Right fielder Jose Cardona (2/5, 3B) singled and tripled while Carlos Garay (1/4, 2B) and Barrett Serrato (1/4, 2B, BB) both doubled.

Leadoff man Todd McDonald singled twice in five at-bats.

DSL: DSL Rangers 2 – DSL Pirates1 9

The Dominican Rangers suffered a rare loss on Thursday, falling 9-2 to the Pirates1.

Rangers starting pitcher Pedro Payano fell to 1-1 after he gave up three runs on six hits in five innings. Relievers Nerfy Nunez and Gionny Fracchiolla each then yielded three runs in two frames.

Right fielder Carlos Arroyo raised his batting average to .299 by going 2-for-3 with a double. He also walked once and stole his seventh base.

Juremi Profar was 1-for-4 with his fourth double.

Centerfielder Sherman Larcus, who was drafted by the Rangers this year, got the start in center field and went 0-for-3 with a walk. He stole his first base and picked up an outfield assist, gunning down a runner at third.
