After finishing six games below .500 in the first half Billings ended the season with a 24-14 second half record before sweeping through two playoff rounds for the 2014 Pioneer League championship. The Mustangs rode a hot start and its relief pitching worked out of some late inning jams as they brought home the hardware Friday.

The minor league playoffs have begun with Bakersfield and Billings both winning their first game to take 1-0 leads in the California and Pioneer Leagues. Both teams overcame deficits and pulled away by scoring in each of their final four at-bats.

September is often highly anticipated by prospects, especially if they’re on the 40-man roster. This year Cincinnati added ten from the farm onto their expanded roster, most of which have seen previous MLB action, many with the Reds this year. Among those making MLB debuts is 22 year-old Yorman Rodriguez who the Reds signed with a $2.5 million bonus out of Venezuela in 2009.

Before the season Venezuelan prospect Argenis Aldazoro was not on any top Reds prospects lists, but his numbers at Billings this season may change that. Now in his fifth year in the Reds organization the 21 year-old outfield prospect is showing skills that will merit promotion up the system.

With brisk activity in the Cincinnati active roster recently the Reds had to deal with some constraints to the 40-man roster feeding it. A former top prospect, Ryan LaMarre was a casualty when he was recently outrighted to make room for a pitcher. He will remain in the organization after signing a free agent contract.

Donald Lutz recently returned from the Reds and brought his bat with him. This time around he’s hitting AAA pitching better than he had before. Meanwhile Jon Moscot, a pitching prospect with a hard luck record made his debut at Louisville where he’ll make a case for an AAA rotation spot in 2015.

Bakersfield Comes Back Again

Former UCLA teammates Beau Amaral and Jeff Gelalich have been in the same outfield since helping the Bruins to the College World Series in 2012. Now they’re both at Bakersfield where they both had two-homer games in a comeback win by the Blaze on Sunday.

Bakersfield Wins in Walk-off

Bakersfield made a nice comeback Friday night with a walk-off double in the ninth inning. Juan Perez contributed to the win with a three hits and a couple of runs. This is the fourth season in the organization for the late-rounder and his performance should get him a shot in AA in 2015.
